AMERICAN DIRT (Flatiron) by Jeanine Cummins is almost too close to the heart seeing what is going on at the Mexico-US border. Just because it’s not in the news doesn’t mean the horrors at our border aren’t still happening. Families are still being stripped apart and children are being held in cages.

After sixteen relatives are massacred by a drug lord, Lydia and her eight year old son, Luca embark on a desperate journey from Acapulco to El Norte … the United States. That’s the opening of AMERICAN DIRT which is already being called the novel of 2020. It’s being likened to a modern version of the classic, THE GRAPES OF WRATH.

What Lydia and Luca endure to get to “El Norte” is almost too horrifying to read. To know people are still experiencing this desperate journey makes me question where our empathy is as a nation. gives it, what I consider the best review/recommendation: “Reading AMERICAN DIRT will make you a better person, plain and simple. Believe all the hype and devour it immediately.”

I concur.

Jeanine Cummins is the author of four books: the bestselling memoir A Rip in Heaven, and the novels The Outside BoyThe Crooked Branch, and American Dirt. She lives in New York with her husband and two children.

Thanks to Flatiron we have one copy of AMERICAN DIRT to giveaway. Just tell us how your new year is going. We’ll announce a winner soon. Good luck.

  1. It has not been a good year so far. We lost my dear father-in-law on 1/16 following a severe stroke. He loved to read and I gave him Cilka’s Journey which he never got a chance to read. American Dirt is my #1 on my list for books to read this year.

  2. My year has seemed to be off to a slow but steady start, which I don’t mind. Although I’ve been sick off and on I’ve been fortunate enough to begin two new volunteer opportunities, spend time with my new Grandson, celebrate my oldest daughter’s birthday and read 4 great books as well as a BETA read. As I look at this I think it’s a pretty good start for 20 days in! Hope you are having a lovely start as well!

  11. My year has been a mixed bag so far. The focus on my health is going well and spending time with family. But work and some other personal things have been a little overwhelming. Hoping things will start to improve next month.

  13. My new year is up and down. I’ve been doing better overall, but the small town I live in recently experienced some tragic deaths of young people in car accidents, so it’s been tough.
