LOVE DOESN’T COME WITH AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL.

Okay, so now that I’ve cried my heart out and wiped away my tears and have blown my nose, I can tell you about how much I LOVED, THE GIRL HE USED TO KNOW (St.MartinsPress) by Tracey Garvis Graves.

Annika (rhymes with MoGravesnica) Rose, a high-functioning adult on the autism spectrum is an English major at the University of Illinois. Anxious in social situations where she finds most people’s behavior confusing, she’d rather be surrounded by the order and discipline of books or the quiet solitude of playing chess.

Jonathan Hoffman was in love with Annika ten years ago, but when he moved from Chicago to New York City expecting her to follow, she didn’t and they lost touch, as well as the romance ended.

Now Jonathan is back and he runs into Annika a few years after moving into the Windy City. She’s living the life she wanted as a librarian. He’s a Wall Street whiz, recovering from a divorce and seeking a fresh start. The attraction and strong feelings they once shared are instantly rekindled. His heart once again fall for the shy and awkward, yet brilliant and beautiful Annika. He admires her ability to be true to herself, quirks and all, and accepts the challenges involved in pursuing a relationship with her. Jonathan and Annika bring out the best in each other, finding the confidence and courage within themselves to plan a future together.

What follows is a tender love affair that withstands everything except the unforeseen tragedy that forces them apart, shattering their connection and leaving them to navigate their lives alone. They confront the fears and anxieties that drove them apart. Will their second chance end before it truly begins.

  1. The Notebook by Nicolas Sparks. He creates loveable characters that you want to root for, although there isn’t always a happy ending!

  2. My favorite love story is The Fault in Our Stars, because these kids had no chance whatever. None. But yet, they found this great love.

  3. The Thorn Birds. I loved it because it was controversial since Father Ralph was a priest. It was a love story that was heart breaking.

  4. My all time favorite is the love story in the movie An Affair to Remember (sigh, Cary Grant) but your intro made me think right away of The Notebook and How to Walk Away. Takes a box of Kleenex but the story is worth it.

  5. One favorite would be Georgette Heyer’s Frederica – hero gets involved with the family of a distant relative and ends up falling for the no nonsense sister.

  6. I have a hard time choosing just one. I think the ones I read the most is PS I love you by Cecelia Ahern and The walk by Nicholas sparks.
