CHRISTMASTIME 1939: Prequel to the Christmastime Series is the prequel to Linda Mahkovec’s “Christmastime Series.” It’s love stories set in New York City, during WWII. Characters face challenges and follow their dreams during this difficult time in history. Grab a cup of hot chocolate and find a warm fuzzy chair to settle in.
Set in Brooklyn, we meet the young widow Lillian Hapsey and her two sons, Tommy and Gabriel. Even though the Christmas season is just around the corner, Lillian has no Christmas spirit. Alone, unhappy with her job, and plagued by financial concerns, Christmas has become a burden to her.
Overshadowing everything is the war in Europe. Despite the setbacks, Lillian is determined to give her sons a happy Christmas. Can she rekindle her girlhood love for the holiday season? Rediscovering her touchstone just might be the key to unlocking the excitement and magic of Christmas.
I must admit while reading this novel, I saw the black and white movie playing in my head. Hopefully these stories will be produced in television form for our holiday enjoyment.

My fondest holiday memory is going to my grandmother’s house for Christmas. The house smelled like homemade yeast rolls and chicken and dressing. She made all of the grandchildren’s favorite desserts. This included coconut cake, Mississippi mud cake, chocolate pie, lemon pie, brownies, fudge and divinity.

When I lived in a Northern Clime for many years and was very young we would take a drive to the neighborhoods nearby and look at the bright and extraordinary decorations and lights. Snow was on the ground, the city was still and life was simple and beautiful. I remember those days since they were meaningful.

I remember Christmas when I was 5. My mom, my sister, and I all got matching pajamas for Christmas morning. I opened up my favorite gift…paper dolls.

My fondest Christmas memory is the birth of my first child. He arrived almost 3 weeks early. My water broke on Christmas Eve but he took his time and arrived at dinner time on Christmas Day. One of my greatest joys!

I have so many fond memories but I guess the Christmases when I was a child and the entire family would come home to Mom and Dads for Christmas dinner. My Grandpa would always eat and then fall asleep at the table. He was a dairy farmer and was always exhausted. The adults ate at the big table and all the kids ate at the kids table which was right next to the adult table. Families don’t get together like that anymore. I miss those times!

The book sounds wonderful. I love the time period it is set in. My fondest memory is watchingbmy boys on Christmas morning as they see what Santa brought them, nothing better than kids laughing and smiling.

My favorite childhood Christmas memory is the year my best friend and I both got new bikes. We practically rode the wheels off those bikes in the following years.
