We first fell in love with MINDY MEJIA when we read her debut thriller, EVERYTHING YOU WANT ME TO BE (Simon&Schuster). I knew a major talent in the publishing world had arrived.
Recently she scared the pants off us with LEAVE NO TRACE.
There is a place in Minnesota with hundreds of miles of glacial lakes and untouched forests called the Boundary Waters. Ten years ago a man and his son trekked into this wilderness and never returned.
Search teams found their campsite ravaged by what looked like a bear. They were presumed dead until a decade later…the son appeared. Discovered while ransacking an outfitter store, he was violent and uncommunicative and sent to a psychiatric facility. Maya Stark, the assistant language therapist, is charged with making a connection with their high-profile patient. No matter how she tries, however, he refuses to answer questions about his father or the last ten years of his life.
But Maya, who was abandoned by her own mother, has secrets, too. And as she’s drawn closer to this enigmatic boy who is no longer a boy, she’ll risk everything to reunite him with his father who has disappeared from the known world.
We can only wait to read what’s next.
Mindy shared some of her Holiday memories with us and you might be surprised by what is her favorite holiday.
- What is your favorite Holiday?
Growing up my favorite holiday was the 4th of July, because my birthday was the day before and I always thought the fireworks were for me! As a parent, my favorite holiday is Christmas. I absolutely love being Santa Claus and making the holiday magical for my kids. We bake cookies and treats, decorate the house, pick out special gifts for each other, and volunteer at a local food bank.
- What do you love about the Holidays?
I love how the holidays exist apart from our everyday lives. We’re allowed to rest, to reconnect, and spend time on the things that really matter.
- What is your fondest Holiday memory?
It’s an odd one. My brother and I were driving around one Christmas Eve, looking for somewhere to eat. We were starving, and knew we couldn’t touch any of Mom’s Christmas feast in the fridge, but nothing was open, not even a gas station. We ended up at a casino and had an amazing midnight buffet, talking and laughing half the night, and it became our secret tradition for many years afterward.
- What are your wishes for 2019?
I’m always telling my kids to “choose kindness” and I wish that for my family and beyond in 2019. To be kinder. To stop and appreciate what we have. To help where we can. And, of course, to read more.
