In Russian novelist, Polina Dashkova’s novel, MADNESS THREADS LIGHTLY (AmazonCrossing), only three people could connect a present-day murderer to a serial killer. Fourteen years ago, a small Siberian town was terrorized and now, one of the three is dead.

She doesn’t have time to play amateur detective. But when a close friend’s suspicious death is ruled a suicide, Lena’s determined to prove he wouldn’t have taken his own life.

As Lena digs in to her investigation, all clues point to murder, and a string of grisly cold-case homicides that stretches back to the Soviet era. When another person in her circle falls victim, Lena fears she and her family may be next. She’s determined to do whatever it takes to protect them. Rosalind’s secrets didn’t die with her.

When a high school classmate is found strangled, her body floating in a lake, in Sarah Bailey’s novel, THE DARK LAKE (GrandCentralPublishing), it’s Detective Sergeant Gemma Woodstock to lead the investigation. And not just any classmate, but Rosalind Ryan, whose beauty and inscrutability exerted a magnetic pull on rural Smithson High School, first during Rosalind’s student years and then again when she returned years later to teach drama.

As much as Rosalind’s life was a mystery to Gemma when they were students together, her death presents even more of a puzzle. What made Rosalind quit her teaching job in Sydney and return to her hometown? Why did she live in a small, run-down apartment when her father was one of the town’s richest men? And despite her many admirers, did anyone in the town truly know her?

Rosalind’s enigmas frustrate and obsess Gemma, who has her own dangerous secrets–an affair with her colleague and past tragedies that may not stay in the past. Brilliantly rendered, THE DARK LAKE has characters as compelling and mysteries as layered as any thriller on the shelf.

Sarah Bailey was born in Melbourne, Australia, where she has lived all her life and resides with her two young sons. She has a degree in journalism and works in advertising. She is currently a partner at the creative agency Mr. Smith. THE DARK LAKE is her first novel.
