The DOVE SELF-ESTEEM PROJECT, a global study was performed and the findings were “beauty-related pressure increases whilst body confidence decreases as girls and women grow older.”

Other findings:

*Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful

*Only 11% of girls globally are comfortable describing themselves as “beautiful”

*72% of girls feel tremendous pressure to be beautiful

*80% of women agree that every woman has something about her that is beautiful, but do not see their own beauty.

*More than half of women globally (54%) agree that when it comes to how they look, they are their own worst critic of the way they look, that they actually opt out of participating in daily life – from going swimming and playing sports, to not attending school or voicing their opinions.

Since 2004, they’ve reached 20-million young people with self-esteem education and are committed to reaching another 20-million by 2020.

Kimberly Rae Miller gets very personal in her memoir, BEAUTIFUL BODIES (LittleA). She shares her own story about trying to control her body with food with facts, figures, history and research, along with humor and self-deprecation. BEAUTIFUL BODIES is totally relatable and a must read for any person who ever looked in the mirror and not like what they saw. Like most people, Kimberly Rae Miller does not have the perfect body, but that hasn’t stopped her from trying, and trying, and trying some more. She’s been at it since she was four years old, when she saw a story on Sesame Street about how the Intuit people eat fat to survive the freezing temperatures. She started eating as much fat as possible, so she’d never be cold again. After college, she had jobs working as a diet-pill model, she became a health-and-fitness writer and ironically, an editor working on celebrities’ bestselling bios, glossing over the trials and tribulations celebs had to endure to stay thin. Needless to say, Kim has spent her life in pursuit of the ideal body. Reading her personal stories feels like chick chat, even when she dumps a bunch of facts and research.

  1. My journey is ongoing. I have lost half my body weight, but still struggle to keep it off. If I am honest I still grapple with body issues. I continue to learn how to love all of myself on a daily basis. Thanks Cindy! I would love to be the lucky recipient of this book I have heard so much about.

  2. I was once a petite, trim young girl with no concerns at all with my body image. As I am now aging, I’m blatantly aware of how much my body has changed. I see changes in skin texture, weight retention, wrinkles in places that shouldn’t have wrinkles, and realize that only so much is within my control. I’ve become more accepting of my flaws and just thankful that I am still a viable woman with brains, a survivor of much, and able to continue on my journey through life with wisdom and inner strength.

  3. I’ll be honest. I’m overweight. Trying to lose weight has been challenging as I can’t move well. Stiff joints and osteoarthritis due to trauma to knees suffered in my teens. Psoriasis isn’t fun, either. So, basically, I manage it. I do look for positives such as liking my wavy hair and wrinkles hasn’t set in yet.

    1. I’ve been overweight, underweight and every weight in between, but I always think I’m fat. It started when I was young and everyone said, ” but you have such a pretty face”. It’s awful.

  4. I am currently in a struggle, fighting weight gain due to age (just turned 50) and an injury (plantars fasciitis) that made me NOT want to work out, due to pain. I am getting back on track. I joined a gym in January (didn’t go as much as I should), I added yoga (which I am loving and has helped tremendously), and now I’ve added Pilates and personal training. I’ve been eating healthier, but the discouraging thing is no weight loss – YET!!

  5. At 63 I’ll never have a flat tummy again no matter how much I exercise. And my hips have widened. But I’m in good health so I’ll just accept myself the way I am!

  6. Body image has been a struggle in my family since I can remember. Back in the 50s-60s, my mom dealt with her weight and the small town doctor “helped” with “diet pills” back then which was speed. So we had to watch her weight go up and down with the cycles of pills. The very real struggle of weight has always been an issue for myself and two sisters. Thank you for writing about body image!!

  7. I have been a little chunky almost all of my life. For a short while I was on a diet and walking kick and lost too much weight and was too thin. Now I’m older and my thyroid doesn’t work right, I’m on meds for it but I’m just plain fat and very tired. At this point, I’m just happy to be me and be somewhat healthy.

  8. I got teased for being tall my ENTIRE childhood. I have problems with my skin, and my shape isn’t considered, when describing “real women” – whatever the hell that means. In spite of all that, I don’t really have a probelm with myself. I’d just like to be able to filter out the white noise from others’ opinions.

  9. I struggle with my weight after having twins. I eat because I’m depressed, I’m depressed because of my weight. It’s a vicious cycle. And then when your 3 year old twins ask if you have a baby in your tummy. Lol.
